Not that you need the reminder, but it's that time of year again: new year, new beginnings. Time to make those resolutions and get on a healthier track.

But those well-minding resolutions shouldn't be a stressor in your life. What if we told you that you can have fun and be a bit healthier? Sounds great, right? Well stay with us as we introduce a fun, new concept: healthy snack options.

Okay, it's not exactly a novel idea, but we do have 10 snacking options that are a breeze to make, a delight to test out, and will have you forgetting about all those sugary, greasy snacks you want to avoid.

Snack Idea #1: Frozen Yogurt and Granola

Grab a few cupcake liners and make this delicious frozen treat! Layer granola and your favorite yogurt, top with fruit and throw them in the freezer for about 30 minutes. Remove and store in a freezer bag in the freezer for an easy frozen snack that you can feel good about eating.

And for another flavor idea, combine lime Greek yogurt, granola and a little honey for Key Lime Pie Parfaits, like in the recipe on our portal

Snack Idea #2: Almond Butter Apple Slices

The second resolution-friendly snack idea isn’t one you can prep too far in advance, but it is tasty and simple nonetheless. All you have to do is slice a few apples and drizzle a little almond butter over the top. Then, for an extra flavor kick, top with cacao nibs. These apples are a great mid-day snack that is sure to leave you and your little ones feeling satisfied.

You can also use peanut, sunflower or cashew butter if you prefer one of these choices over almond butter.

Snack Idea #3: Avocado Deviled Eggs

Eggs are protein-packed and low-carb, making them perfect make-ahead snack options to help you stick to your resolution. To make our third snack idea for Avocado Deviled Eggs, start by hard-boiling your eggs and removing the yolks, adding them to a bowl. Then, in that bowl, mix in two avocados. Next, use that as your deviled egg mixture. If you'd like, you can also add in a little bit of sour cream along with salt and pepper.

Pipe your mixture into the hard-boiled eggs using an icing bag for a smooth look. Although, feel free to use a spoon instead. Top with salt and pepper.

Snack Idea #4: Dark Chocolate Almonds

When you think of better-for-you snacks, chocolate-covered nuts probably aren’t the first thing that comes to mind. However, dark chocolate almonds can indeed be considered to be a healthier option. Here’s an easy way to make them at home so you can snack on them throughout the week (in moderation, of course).

  1. Melt dark chocolate over a double broiler (or in the microwave one minute at a time). Try to use the darkest chocolate with the least amount of sugar.
  2. Once melted, add in about one cup of almonds and mix well.
  3. Lay them flat to dry on wax paper, top with sea salt if desired and freeze for about 20 minutes until hardened.
  4. Remove from the freezer, break apart and keep stored in the refrigerator. The perfect treat!

Snack Idea #5: Protein Wraps

Meat and cheese wraps are the perfect make-ahead snack when you need a bit of protein—and it's really great for kids’ lunches as well. Simply wrap a cheese stick in your favorite lunch meat. Make a few ahead of time to grab on your way out the door.

This next resolution-friendly snack idea may seem obvious or overly simple, but if you prep them ahead of time and enough for a few days, it makes it easy for you and your family to grab one for snack time. Mason jars are the best way to create ready-made snacks with the perfect portion sizes. Get creative and use mixed berries, grapes, veggies, etc.

You can even try sticking a couple in the freezer for a fun and frosty snack! That works especially well with grapes and blueberries.

Snack Idea #8: The Poached Egg

Here’s another way to incorporate the protein-packed ingredient - eggs. And in this case, we’re talking about poached eggs, which if you’ve never made or tried one, we can almost guarantee that you will find yourself putting them on everything once you try it.

They are a perfect topping for anything from sautéed spinach to a turkey burger. The poached egg is a healthy snack you'll crave.

Snack Idea #9: The Yogurt Parfait

You can make these ahead of time at the beginning of the week, seal them tightly and leave them in your refrigerator for the perfect mid-morning snack. However, with a little chocolate drizzle, they can quickly become a better-for-you dessert also.

Snack Idea #10: Nice Cream

Need another frozen treat? Nice Cream might be the best thing to ever happen to healthy eating. Start with a base of frozen bananas, add in a tablespoon of cocoa powder and blend. Be sure not to add any liquid to keep the base more of an ice cream texture. Then, top with dark chocolate, berries, nuts, or whatever else you dream up!

Plan your meals and snacks this New Year around these better-for-you food options and you will be sure to succeed. And from our family to yours, we hope you have a happy and healthy New Year!
