Pets Are People Too: 6 Human Foods for Dogs and Cats
April 17, 2018 | Food Lion
Pets are a part of the family. We talk to them, spend time with them, and seek comfort from them. Sharing a meal with them is not out of the question. However, not all of the foods on your plate are safe for your pet. If you're wondering what human foods cats can eat, or what the best human foods for dogs are, check out this list.
1. Salmon and Sardines
Salmon, sardines, and other fish are packed full of good fats, like omega-3s. That makes them a good choice for your cat or dog. Salmon has extra vitamins and protein, which are a good supplement to your pet's diet. Sardines are soft, and are a good source of calcium for your pet. Be sure to pick out large bones to prevent choking. When serving sardines, be sure to take them out of the can to keep your cat from cutting itself. Opt for sardines packed in water and without added salt for the healthiest option.
2. Cooked Eggs
Dogs and cats love cooked eggs, so it's great that this food is also good for them. Never feed pets raw eggs, and be sure not to allow them to eat the shells. Instead, cook the eggs thoroughly, and then add them to their meals for added protein and B vitamins.
3. Raw Vegetables
We could all use more vegetables in our diets, and that goes for our furry friends, too. Vegetables are a good snack for pets because they are low in calories, which helps prevent obesity from too much snacking. Additionally, they have a lot of fiber to help with digestion and regularity. Raw vegetables (like baby carrots) also help clean teeth to prevent plaque and tartar buildup. Cats tend to be pickier about vegetables than dogs are, but if they show interest, don't hesitate to let them snack. Keep onions and garlic out of your pet's diet since these can be toxic for both dogs and cats, according to the American Kennel Club.
4. Cooked Chicken
Chicken is a common ingredient in both dog and cat food. Cooked chicken without skin or seasonings is a welcome addition to any pet's food bowl. Never allow pets to chew on the bones, and make sure that it is fully cooked before serving. Chicken is one of the best human foods for dogs and cats if you happen to run out of kibble and need to fill their bellies in a pinch.
5. Cheese
Many people use cheese to coax their pets into swallowing medication. It's a safe human food for cats and dogs, but it tends to be high in fat, and should be eaten in small quantities. For dogs, opt for low-fat cheeses like mozzarella and cottage cheese. Cats prefer hard cheeses like Swiss and Gouda.
6. Oatmeal
Oatmeal is high in fiber, and is one of the best people foods for dogs. It's especially useful in helping dogs with bowel issues. Cats can eat it too, but they might now show interest in it since they are obligate carnivores.
