Our Participation in Earth Hour - Food Lion Sustainability

You’ve heard of Earth Day, but what about Earth Hour?

Earth Hour started as a symbolic lights out event in Sydney, Australia, in 2007, and has become the world's largest environmental grassroots movements. Organized by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), the event is held annually to encourage individuals, communities and businesses to turn off non-essential electric lights for one hour, from 8:30 -- 9:30 pm on a specific day towards the end of March, as a symbol of commitment to the planet.

On Saturday, March 30, 2019, Food Lion will participate in Earth Hour by dimming the lights in 387 of our stores at 8:30 P.M. for one hour as a commitment to conserve energy for the past 12 years. We have participated in this event every year since 2008. Food Lion also encourages our associates and their families to participate at home by turning off all non-essential lights and taking all appliances off of standby mode.  Appliances such as mobile phone chargers, computers monitors, printers and televisions that are left on standby, or plugged in but not in use, account for up to 10 percent of the average household’s electricity use.

Food Lion is involved in a number of other environmentally friendly initiatives, including encouraging customers to use reusable bags and being committed to reducing plastic packaging and single use plastics.

We hope you’ll join us and turn out the lights this Saturday!
